The importance of wearing a good fitting bra

Updated: Jun 4, 2024

The majority of women are wearing the wrong size bra. This can cause many women to suffer with back, shoulder, neck and in some cases breast pain. Some have issues with their breasts falling out the top or bottom of the bra. Another common issue is feeling the need to pull down the bra when you move. Wearing the correct bra size should relive the discomforts women feel and reduce premature breast sagging. A good fitting bra will improve posture, overall shape underneath clothes, uplift and support the breast tissue. It can change the life for a woman.

80% of the support, of a bra, comes from the back band. If the back band is rising up and creating an arch shape up the back, you loose all the support from the bra: this is why many women experience so much pain in their back or shoulders. The bra riding up means the cups fall lower and therefore the weight of your chest is putting more pressure on your back. An ill fitting bra can also lead to straps falling off your shoulders. When the back band is pulled away from the torso, there should only be a one inch gap. Any bigger gap means the band size is too big and therefore need to size down. A bra should feel snug not tight. Tight suggests discomfort and pinching, whereas snug means you can feel the bra and know it is there but it is not uncomfortable. A new bra will always feel snug at first as the elastic has to give.

When buying a new bra you should always have the hook and eyes on the loosest hooks. If you can get the hooks on the tightest, in a new bra, it is too big and at least one band size smaller is needed. The reason the back band needs to be snug is so the wires can do their job effectively. The back band pulls the wires back, which tilts the breast tissue up creating the uplifted look. The cups should sit perfectly flush over the breasts. If there is too much room and the fabric is loose, the cups are too big and a smaller cup size is needed. If the fabric is too tight, it will squish the breast tissue and create the "double boob" effect. In this case, a bigger cup is needed. There may be a small gap at the top of the bra's apex. This is normal as some women are not super full at the top of the breasts and can also be an affect of growing age. However the majority, if not all of the cup should be filled to be the correct size. You may find different shapes and styles of bras suit your shape better. The wires should sit flush against your chest. There are different lengths of wires used for different styles of bras so finding the one that feels most comfortable to you is important. Some women's breasts are very full in the middle and may find it difficult to find wires that will sit completely flush to their chest. In cases like this a plunge style bra is suggested as the wires start much lower than other styles.

It is so important to wear the correct size bra. It can reduce back, shoulder neck and chest pain, skin abrasions and irritations. It reduces premature breast sagging, and improve overall shape under clothes and posture.
